A platform used by 50 million candidates across 12 countries

Andrew Bassat, Paul Bassat, and Matt Rockman established SEEK in Melbourne, Australia in November 1997 as an online employment classifieds platform, launching the website in March 1998. On April 18, 2005, SEEK went public on the ASX with a market cap of $587 million.

Approximately half of Australians job candidates use SEEK, and most employers in Australia advertise their open roles on SEEK.

Its job search platform now serves China, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and South Africa. In the midst of this expansion, the the company maintains its headquarters and the majority of its engineering team in Cremorne, Melbourne.

The code submission is no longer a stage gate for us. If someone has taken the time to complete our coding challenge, then we take the time to see how much potential they have.

Almost every day has been a learning experience for me in the past year. In this short period [I have worked] on so many different cloud services, APIs, data query services, monitoring and alerting services. I have been introduced to best practices with strict code reviews, collaboration, pairing and brainstorming sessions.

A luxurious office in Cremorne

The company recently upgraded its office facilities, which most employees attend between 2 - 3 days a week as part of hybrid working. The new office includes spaces that are specifically designed for testing, observation, and research, as well as areas where employees can interact with their colleagues, such as internal winter gardens, outdoor terraces, and courtyards.

The office also features recreational spaces like The Hub and Level 6 Terrace that offer views of the city. It also has a games area like pool table, table tennis table, Xbox Series X and PlayStation for employees to relax and unwind.

Beyond work, SEEK hosts social events and activities including internal hackathons, the SEEK Slam, SEEK Soccer, Footy and annual family carnival days. SEEK also supports a variety of well-being programs and initiatives and is a sponsor of the Midsumma Festival, RuOKDay and Wellbeing week.

Engineering culture

The company uses an agile squad-based model to organise its engineering team, and each autonomous squad can include engineers, data scientists, and product managers.

For example, the Search squad builds and runs the search engine for the entire SEEK group and tackles some fundamental engineering and scalability problems, while the Observability squad looks after critical production infrastructure.

AI is a strong focus at SEEK: the platform relies on multiple AI-enabled core services including behavioural tracking, job recommendations, candidate matching, and personalisation.

Like any large organisation, SEEK has accrued a number of legacy systems. However, the team has developed a defined process for "sunsetting" these legacy systems, including plenty of communication and advance notice, a clear end of support state, temporary 'brownouts' to identify any hidden consumers of the service, and eventual shutdown of the system.
